These three terms get used interchangeably, which is a problem when a marketing leader is trying to decide where next quarter's content budget actually goes. They overlap, but they optimize for three different surfaces, and the tactics that win each one aren't identical.
SEO: optimizing for the ranked list
Classic search engine optimization: earn a high position in the traditional list of blue links. Success metric: rank position and organic click-through. Core levers: backlinks, technical crawlability, keyword-mapped content, page experience.
AEO: optimizing for the direct answer box
Answer Engine Optimization targets the featured snippet, the voice-assistant answer, the "People also ask" box, a single, extracted answer shown above or instead of the ranked list, but still inside a traditional search engine's own UI. Success metric: snippet ownership for a target query. Core levers: direct-answer formatting immediately after a heading, concise definitional language, structured lists and tables a snippet algorithm can lift cleanly.
GEO: optimizing for citation inside a generated answer
Generative Engine Optimization targets being one of the sources a generative model (Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot) synthesizes into its own written answer, sometimes cited by name, sometimes not cited at all even when used. Success metric: appearance rate inside sampled AI answers for a fixed query set, and, where visible, actual citation. Core levers: everything AEO does, plus explicit schema markup, topical completeness (answering the obvious follow-ups in the same page), and third-party corroboration, AI models weight independently-published confirmation of a claim more than a single self-published page repeating it.
Do you need all three?
In practice, yes, and the good news is they're not competing budgets. The structural work that wins AEO (direct-answer formatting) is most of what wins GEO too. Running the DAFZ program, the same content rewrite that grew GEO-cited pages from 20 to 48 also lifted classic SEO visibility from 31.61% to 37.67% in the same 8 weeks, see the full breakdown. Treat it as one content quality bar applied across three scoring systems, not three separate content strategies.
What to tell your team this quarter
If your buyers research before they ever fill out a form, banking, real estate, government services, SaaS, enterprise software, some share of that research is already happening inside an AI answer that never sends you a click. GEO is how you stay part of that answer instead of losing the research phase entirely. It's not a replacement for SEO. It's the next layer on top of it.
