It's the discipline SEO is turning into as more searches never produce a click at all: the answer just appears, sourced from somewhere.

I started treating this as a measurable channel in 2026, running it in parallel with classic SEO for DAFZ (Dubai Airport Free Zone) and DIEZ, two UAE government free zones competing for visibility as businesses increasingly research setup and compliance questions through AI chat rather than search. GEO isn't a new trick on top of SEO. It's a different scoring function, the same content, judged by whether an AI model would trust it enough to repeat it.

The three things that actually move GEO

1. Direct-answer formatting

AI answer engines tend to lift the first clear, self-contained sentence or two after a heading, not the full paragraph, and not anything that requires reading three sentences earlier for context. Every section of citable content should open with a sentence that stands alone: subject, claim, number, done. That's a structural discipline most SEO content doesn't have, because it was written for a human who'd already scrolled past the heading.

2. Schema markup that states identity and facts explicitly

Structured data (JSON-LD), Person, Organization, FAQPage, Article, gives generative engines a machine-readable version of the same facts stated in prose. It doesn't replace good writing, but it removes ambiguity for a model deciding whether to trust and cite a claim.

3. Topical depth, not keyword density

Generative engines synthesize across sources to answer a question fully. A page that only partially answers the query gets blended with three others; a page that answers it completely, including the obvious follow-up questions, has a much better chance of being the single source cited. This is why FAQ sections built around real question phrasing (not keyword variants) outperform thin content pages.

Until platforms expose proper reporting, the practical KPIs I track are: number of pages appearing in AI-generated citations (checked via manual query sampling across Google SGE, ChatGPT, and Perplexity for a fixed keyword set), unique AI-driven search queries reaching the site (via referral pattern and UTM discipline on any traceable AI-sourced clicks), and classic SEO visibility as a correlated baseline, because GEO and SEO reinforce each other; they're not separate content strategies, just separate scoring functions applied to the same well-structured page.

Who should care about this right now

Any B2B or high-consideration B2C brand where research happens before a form fill, banking, real estate, government services, SaaS, education, is already losing some percentage of top-of-funnel visibility to AI-generated answers that never send a click. GEO is how you stay the source those answers are built from, instead of disappearing from the research phase entirely.
